Market Quarter is located on two plots of land in Skolkovo, marked on the master plan of the future innovation city as Z1. From the north the area is adjacent to the technical passage, in the west - to the square and transportation hub (Hub), from the south - to the central transport and pedestrian boulevard Skolkovo, and from the east - to the recreational area. In the southern part of the site is expected the highest intensity of pedestrian traffic, from the transport hub to the University, so it is there that the architects had planned the Market Square.
All functional areas it's proposed to place in two volumes. In order not to interfere with pedestrian direct communication "hub-square-University", Cultural Center, Market and restaurants are part of the north of the Market Square in the low part of the building farthest from the boulevard. Office and administrative rooms of Town Hall, on the contrary, placed in a volume off the ground. Thus it is releasing more space for the public plaza and pedestrian traffic. At hte same time the Square building is related to the market quarter on different levels to provide access to people directly from the transport hub in the area of retail, dining and cultural center.
Visually, a united volume of the complex forms a lasting image that can stand out from the massive Square. For the object of such a public importance it's a must. Market quarter, on the one hand, is a multifunctional center for providing services to residents, and on the other hand - a place of meeting and dialogue of all the innovation community. Therefore, part of the building with Town Hall's rooms functions as an architectural "icon", in connection with this fact the height is increased to 55 meters. Sculptural, curvilinear active volume contrasts with the calm and straightforward Square complex, creating a bright and recognizable composition from all the major points of perception. First it is the poinst on the motion path of the main boulevard of Skolkovo. In each place of the trajectory viewer perceives the volume of the Market quarter building as a unique silhouette.
Facades are supposed to be solved with the use of modern eco-friendly materials: closed parts - metal cassette facade, clear parts - energy efficient stained glass.
From a functional point of view, located in the neighborhood with each other Cultural Center and City Hall are folding into a single multi-space, code-named "Forum Skolkovo", where innovation center's residents receive municipal services, and the guests learn about what is happening in innovation city. Thus, the Cultural Center is a complex space to work, relax and socialize. It includes exhibition space, a multifunctional hall, a small theater hall-transformer Black Box, a media library, coworking area, studios and art shops and cafes. Transparency and openness, transformability and interactivity of all spaces - those planning principles are key to the attractiveness, comfort and friendliness of the Cultural Center. It is easily adaptable to individual needs and capabilities of the physical constraints both of the Skolkovo residents and guests of the city ("barrier-free environment" for persons with disabilities).
And for sure, Market Quarter was designed according to the canons and principles of sustainable development, common to all objects in Skolkovo - the innovative city of the future.
