The vehicular-pedestrian bridge, designed by ATRIUM in collaboration with the Garanin Brothers Creative Workshop, became the starting point for the development of the concept for the Green River Park in the Symbol residential district. Over time, it evolved into one of the park’s principal spatial accents and an important point of attraction for local residents.
The need for the bridge was inherent in the site’s structure itself. The territory, divided by the Green River, required a connection via an internal access road, while the change in topography suggested a bridge structure as the appropriate solution. In the project, this engineering task was developed into an architectural statement. The bridge was conceived as a continuation of the park on two levels simultaneously.
The upper level accommodates traffic movement, while the bridge remains part of the pedestrian route. A green alley and winding pedestrian paths are introduced here, making the journey more scenic and tying it into the overall plasticity of the park. The vehicular roadway, by contrast, is resolved as directly and compactly as possible.
The lower level is integrated into the structure of the boulevard. The Green River passes beneath the bridge, while the space below it is transformed into a covered urban living room, protected from both rain and sun. Shops and cafés from the surrounding buildings open onto this area, which is why it is embedded in the everyday life of the district and functions as a полноценное public space.
A special role in the image of the bridge is played by its supports. Eleven massive columns, between 3.5 and 4.5 metres high and around 3 metres in diameter, were conceived as distinctive green containers for rowan trees and climbing vines. The rowans grow upwards, while the vines cascade downwards, allowing the bridge to become literally overgrown with greenery and to merge with the landscape.
Swings are placed beneath the bridge, and the space itself is designed to accommodate a variety of urban scenarios — from everyday recreation to small open-air performances and theatrical events. In this way, the bridge in the Green River becomes more than simply an element of infrastructure. It connects different parts of the district, organises movement, supports public life and reinforces the image of the park as the principal space of the Symbol residential district.
