The house is located in an old settlement of former generals’ dachas, on a pine-covered hill. It was designed for a young family with a child. The form of the house is shaped, among other factors, by the desire to protect the residents from views from neighbouring plots.
A folded concrete surface sequentially becomes the roof, wall, ground-floor slab and other elements. Like a shell, it protects the northern side, where the neighbouring plots are located and where there is no sun in any case. The other three facades are glazed as extensively as possible, allowing the owners to enjoy the views from the top of the hill. This also fills the interiors with natural light. The internal courtyard with a deck is also oriented to the south.
Particular attention was paid to the development of the folded shell. Its integrity and self-sufficiency are emphasised by the fact that it is raised above the ground. It is relatively thin for concrete and for the existing cantilevers — 660 mm — yet, despite its elegance, it does not appear fragile. The folds are articulated through window “cuts” with bonded glass corners.
In the ground-floor interior, the unity of the form is maintained through flowing spaces. The unity of exterior and interior is achieved by extending the facade materials into the interior: the timber of the residential “cubes”, the fireplace stone and the concrete shell. The theme of the fold continues in the other structures on the site: in the entrance arch with the security post and in the bathhouse embedded into the hill.
