The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest administrative-territorial unit in the world, covering more than 3 million square kilometres in the Russian Far East. This unique place on Earth is known not only for its diamonds and extreme climate, with temperatures ranging from –60 to +40°C, but also for its talented people and distinctive culture. Yakutsk, the capital of the republic, is the largest city in the world built on permafrost, with a population of 320,000. Today, the city faces an acute shortage of public educational urban spaces where young people can spend time comfortably throughout the year, socialise and develop creatively.
Future Generations Park in Yakutsk is a new type of educational space, combining the functions of a park and a citywide event centre focused on developing talent and supporting young people in Yakutia.
On a 2.4-hectare site, a system of outdoor and enclosed spaces has been created, accommodating universal exhibition areas, a conference hall, co-working spaces, educational centres and other facilities for comprehensive personal development — from private supplementary education schools to free platforms provided to young start-ups for the realisation of their original products and inventions. Educational spaces are actively combined with entertainment and recreational functions, while also being integrated into the natural setting and landscape design. The site offers numerous opportunities for walking, sport and various outdoor events. The space takes into account the interests of all age groups in the city, while being oriented primarily towards young people from the nearby university.
The volumetric and spatial concept is based on the reflection of the Yakut landscape and national cultural identity. The extraordinary nature of Yakutia — with its thaw lakes, river meanders and permafrost crystals — served as the prototype for the formation of the open spaces. The architectural concept is linked to a contemporary reinterpretation of the ancient Yakut epic, cultural images, symbols and ornaments, while also visually interpreting the typology of the traditional Yakut dwelling. Advanced technologies and climate-correction systems for creating a comfortable outdoor environment at any time of year, together with a carefully planned event programme and public involvement in the life of the park, ensure its successful year-round operation.
SAKHAblock is a universal modular architectural and landscape unit — a construction system that sets new design standards, making it possible to create comfortable, authentic public spaces in any city of the Far North and to fully unlock the potential of the Republic of Sakha and its people.
The project won the All-Russian architectural competition, whose results were announced in January 2019. Since then, it has received numerous awards and prizes, as well as additional financial support from the 100 Leaders of Urban Development programme. In December 2019, the park received a special jury mention in the Educational Projects category at the World Architecture Festival, while the project video became the overall winner of another festival category — the WAF Visualisation Prize.
