Almaty-2 Station, built in the 1930s, has long divided the contemporary city into two parts. In order to connect the historic quarter with the rest of the urban fabric, the station will be extended with a concourse — an elevated passage to the opposite side, incorporating a ticketing point, lounge area and access down to the railway platforms. The concourse will combine multiple functions and link together all parts of the rapidly developing city. Its dynamic form is inspired by the constant movement of people, traffic flows and the energy generated between them. The structure itself appears to flow from one side of the railway tracks to the other.

Passenger flows within the station will be organised so that visitors using the cafés do not interfere with those hurrying to catch a train. Passenger drop-off will take place through underground passages, while boarding will be organised via an escalator descending from the concourse.

The central square, previously occupied by a car park, will be transformed into a pedestrian zone with a monument and places to sit and relax. All surrounding buildings — the station, the multi-storey car park and the shopping centre — will be connected by the concourse. It will be possible to reach any of them via the passage without going outside. In addition, office towers will be built next to the station, helping to shape a new business quarter in the city. These, too, will have access to the concourse.

A new surface metro line will depart from the station, connecting Almaty-1 and Almaty-2 stations, as well as linking the city centre with the outskirts and the airport. In addition, a metro station will be located on the opposite side of the station, with access to it passing through the concourse. This is intended to attract a new flow of people and retail activity to the quarter adjacent to the station.
By linking different parts of the city to one another, the station, with its technological architecture, will become one of the principal symbols of contemporary Almaty.
